Made in America: SSC Honors Tradition through Innovation
Within American manufacturing lies a story of resilience, innovation, and ingenuity. For generations, manufacturing has defined the American dream, and for many, that American dream is synonymous with opportunity and prosperity. SSC was built on a unique opportunity to provide top-quality products, supported by superior customer service. Staying true to our American manufacturing roots, SSC has challenged the status quo, while remembering the foundation we were built on.
A Storied History
To understand the depth of SSC’s history, we must go back to the beginning. For those in the garage door industry, rarely does a day go by without reaching for a spring wire chart. Many are familiar with the SSC wire chart and have raved about its usability and accessibility. And for that, we have Clarence Veigel to thank.
With decades of industry experience, Veigel took that knowledge and expertise to create a legacy four generations strong. After years of working on dozens of torsion spring engineering charts, Veigel published his “Torsion Spring Rate Book,” containing about 200 spring charts in 1958, at age 60. A few years later, in 1962, Veigel envisioned providing top-quality products, along with superior customer service, thus founding SSC in Toledo, OH. Joined by many family members over the decades, Veigel established industry standards by advancing expectations and elevating customer experience.
Through decades and generations of advancement, SSC has continued to expand its product and service offerings without losing sight of its roots. What began as a torsion spring manufacturer has grown to an industry-leading manufacturer and supplier of choice for customers. Further elevating SSC’s reach, SSC has expanded operations to include service centers in Orlando, FL, Detroit, MI, Chicago, IL, Dallas, TX, Phoenix, AZ and Annapolis, MD, along with a second spring manufacturing facility in Visalia, CA. Today, Matt McAlear, fourth-generation CEO, carries on this mission of unparalleled service through innovation, inspired by the advancements his family has made for over 60 years and driven by a desire to honor the celebrated legacy.
Committed to Quality, Embracing Innovation
SSC, like many leading American manufacturers, has found itself at the crossroads of tradition and innovation over the years. Where others have stuck with the status quo, SSC has intertwined the two to propel the industry, while staying true to its founding values from 1962. It is no secret that technology has posed challenges for manufacturing in recent years. For SSC, rising technology has allowed the company to embrace change for the betterment of our products, services, and resources, without sacrificing the exceptional quality our manufacturing team members provide.
With the rise of the internet, SSC released Solutions Spring Engineering software for desktop computers in 1997. A little over a decade later, in 2010, SSC saw another opportunity to shake up the industry by launching the first version of the Solutions Mobile Engineering app for Apple and Android devices. These digital tools expanded Veigel’s work and modernized them to reach even more customers and businesses, both in the office and in the field.
SSC’s newest innovation, DuraMasterTM, launched in 2024, is a testament to the value placed on uniting tradition with innovation. After setting industry expectations for garage door springs, SSC knew there was an opportunity to develop a new product for our customers. Professional dealers sought elevation, and we crafted the new professional standard for them. Strengthened by SSC’s proprietary manufacturing process, DuraMasterTM is a representation of the innovation driven by SSC’s traditional, American manufacturing roots.
Further enhancing SSC’s manufacturing footprint, Invicta Door®️, was launched to provide customers with durable, stylish, and American-made doors. Backed by the service and quality our customers recognize SSC for, Invicta Door ®️ was met with industry enthusiasm and customer satisfaction.
Supporting Community
Founded in Toledo, OH, but expanding throughout the country, SSC understands the importance of supporting the local communities we serve and our fellow Americans during times of need. From weather disasters to charitable organizations, SSC has made it a duty to back various causes and organizations. In 2018, SSC joined industry members in supporting overhead door businesses severely affected by Hurricane Florence and traveled down to Houston that same year to aid in rebuilding Houston homes following Hurricane Harvey. The company has also initiated the annual support of causes including Susan G. Komen and the Race for the Cure, along with Operation Holiday Drop, supporting active-duty military members, Bike to the Bay, supporting the National MS Society among many others. Team members across the organization look to expand these efforts to grow our support year after year.
Championing American Manufacturing, Together
By choosing SSC, customers are not just investing in a quality garage door spring, they are supporting a legacy of American craftsmanship and innovation. A legacy built on four generations of family-owned leadership, poised to take American manufacturing to new levels of excellence with the continued goal to be our customers’ manufacturer and supplier of choice. Providing quality products is good enough for some, but not SSC. At SSC, it is our customers that drive us to want more. It is why we are Uniquely Better through the customers we serve, the positive culture we create, and the communities we support.
